Despite that Mendeleev had never manoeuvred an air ballon before, the rainy weather forced him to fly alone. The balloon eventually failed to elevate above the clouds, so this observation was not considered successful scientifically, however, Mendeleev was awarded a medal from the French Academy of Meteorological Aerostation for this courageous flight.
